A very interesting tessera from Apameia (?)
Lot 2852
Xenon of Apameia (?), 6th century. Tessera (Lead, 22x21 mm, 8.59 g, 12 h). Block monogram ΞENⲰNOC within square frame. Rev. Block monogram AΠAMIAC (?) within decorated square frame. Leu Web Auction 14 (2020), 1686. A very interesting tessera. About extremely fine.

From an important collection of Roman and Byzantine seals, tesserae and amulets, formed before 2021.

A possible solution for the reverse monogram is AΠAMIAC ('of Apameia'). If correct, the monogram could indicate the place of origin of the signatory, who would therefore be 'Xenon of Apameia.' However, given that some Byzantine tesserae explicitly mention charitable foundations, the toponym could also refer to a diaconia of the city of Apameia.
